Survey: One Third of Youths Have Engaged in Sexting

If you think the sexting phenomenon is growing, you’re not imagining it. According to a new survey, almost one-third of youths admit they’ve engaged in sexting-related activities that involved either e-mailing a photo or video of themselves in the nude or being the recipient of such images.

Through a survey conducted by MTV and the Associated Press, they found out that of those who admitted to distributing suggestive images of themselves, about 61 percent report that they were pressured by someone to send the image. Girls were more likely to share a naked image of themselves than boys. and those who are already sexually active were much more likely to send an image than those who were not sexually active. Most of the respondents sent the image to a significant other or a person of romantic interest to them. But 29 percent said they shared naked images of themselves with someone they knew only online.

MTV is also launching a contest called " Redraw the line challenge" to address digital abuse and also to help educate people especially youths.

Through this survey, it shows that new media have also a negative side to it such as sending 'private pictures' to other people. I think that such a contest would be useful in educating the people on digital abuse.

  1. Hi Weiren! Woah - this certainly shows the negative side of new media! The sad truth is that new media has a lot of avenues, and people can do almost whatever they want in those avenues. Hence mobile phones and their SMS services are used for sexting.
It's great, though, that companies like MTV are tackling digital abuse and reaching out to youth.

  2. Hi Weiren, the figures are really startling. I don't think this is a problem or flaw with new media though, the underlying issue of youths being increasingly nonchalant to sex is to blame here.

  3. Hi,Weiren, you shows that new media has a negative side.I think it is because of the person who use it to make new media becomes nagative. If we could use our current medias effectively, new media is no long negative, but positive.

  4. Hi Weiren, like Shea, I feel that the underlying issue here is on youths and their attitude to sex and privacy. However, I wouldn't say that this doesn't show a flaw with new media because every form of media (not just the new media) plays a part in perpetuating sex and privacy as we know it in the pop culture today - which in turn affects the attitudes of youths towards these issues. So to a certain extent, the new media is to blame and the issue should not be on teaching youths the pros and cons of new media but on changing their mindset and attitude towards such issues.

  5. Hi Weiren! I agree with Shea -- the problem lies with the people, and not the platform. In this case, new media, instead of being used, is being abused.

  6. Weiren, yes sexting is one of the negative sides of the New Media. An example of a famous celebrity that was involved with this was Vanessa Anne Hudgens from High School Musical. Her nude picture which she sent to her boyfriend was circulated on the Internet, and caused her many problems, even almost losing her acting career in Disney!

  7. I think that MTV's initiative regarding sexting is commendable as MTV itself is quite influential with tweens and young adults and these are the people who're sexting, so in my opinion, all they need to do is throw in a few celebs to make their education a popular one.

  8. Hi Weiren, sexting is the negative side of new media + the results of the survey conducted makes the issue slightly going towards serious. Its good that MTV is having initiatives for "curing" this digital abuse. I think is more on education and understanding the usage of these convenient tools.
